Mac Storage Explained: Internal vs External, HDD vs SSD, Thunderbolt vs USB — What Actually Matters

Mac storage can feel like a maze of acronyms and numbers — NVMe, PCIe, Thunderbolt 4, USB4, RAID, APFS. Most of it is genuinely simple once someone explains what each thing actually does and why it matters. This guide cuts through the jargon and gives you a clear picture of what's what, so you can make informed decisions about your own setup.


Internal vs External Storage

Internal storage is the SSD soldered inside your Mac. It's the fastest storage your machine has — directly connected to the processor via PCIe lanes, with no interface bottleneck. macOS, your applications, and anything that benefits from the fastest possible read/write speeds should live here.

External storage is anything that connects via a cable — Thunderbolt, USB-C, USB-A. It's slower than internal storage in most cases (though high-end Thunderbolt drives get close), but it's removable, shareable between machines, and available in much larger capacities for far less money than Apple charges for internal upgrades. Media libraries, project archives, backups, and overflow storage all belong here.

On current Macs (M1 onwards), internal storage is soldered and cannot be upgraded after purchase. This makes choosing your initial storage capacity important — and makes fast external storage a practical necessity for most professional users.


HDD vs SSD vs NVMe — What's the Difference?

HDD (Hard Disk Drive)

Mechanical spinning drives. A physical platter rotates at 5400 or 7200 RPM while a read/write head moves across it. Sequential speeds typically top out around 150 MB/s. HDDs are slow, prone to failure from physical shock, and make noise. Apple stopped shipping them as primary storage years ago, but many older iMacs still have one. If your iMac has an HDD, replacing it with an SSD is the single most impactful upgrade you can make.

SSD (Solid State Drive)

No moving parts. Data is stored on flash memory chips. SATA SSDs — the most common type used in older Mac upgrades — connect via the SATA interface and deliver speeds up to around 550 MB/s. That's roughly 3–4x faster than an HDD for everyday tasks, and dramatically faster for random reads (which is what makes your Mac feel snappy during normal use). Reliable, silent, and power-efficient.

NVMe SSD (Non-Volatile Memory Express)

NVMe is a protocol designed specifically for flash storage, running over PCIe lanes rather than the SATA bus. The result is a massive speed increase: modern NVMe drives deliver 3000–7000 MB/s sequential read speeds — roughly 10x a SATA SSD and 40x a traditional HDD. All current Mac internal storage is NVMe. External NVMe drives via Thunderbolt or USB4 are the fastest external storage option available.


Thunderbolt vs USB — The Connection That Limits Your Drive

A fast NVMe drive is only as useful as the connection it runs through. This is where a lot of buyers go wrong — buying a fast drive and connecting it via a slow cable.

USB 3.0 / USB 3.1

Speeds up to 5Gb/s (625 MB/s) or 10Gb/s (1250 MB/s). Fine for backups and file transfers. Not suitable for running demanding applications or editing 4K video directly from the drive.

USB 3.2 Gen 2 (USB-C)

Up to 10Gb/s (1250 MB/s). Better, but still below what a fast NVMe is capable of. Adequate for 4K compressed video editing.

USB4 (40Gb/s)

The current generation standard, available on all Apple silicon Macs. Up to 40Gb/s (5000 MB/s), enabling drives like the OWC Express 1M2 USB4 to reach over 3000 MB/s in real-world use. This is the sweet spot for most professional external storage needs today.

Thunderbolt 3 / Thunderbolt 4 (40Gb/s)

Same 40Gb/s bandwidth as USB4, but with stricter Intel certification requirements. Thunderbolt guarantees minimum performance levels that USB4 does not — which is why bus-powered Thunderbolt drives like the OWC Envoy Pro FX deliver more consistent speeds than equivalently-priced USB4 alternatives. TB4 also supports daisy-chaining up to six devices and DisplayPort for monitors.

Thunderbolt 5 (80Gb/s)

The newest standard, shipping on M4 Pro and M4 Max Macs. Doubles the bandwidth to 80Gb/s, enabling drives like the OWC Express 1M2 80G to reach over 6000 MB/s. If you have a TB5 Mac, this is where you want to be for external storage. For an SSD RAID option, with 4 NVME SSDs, there is the OWC Express 4M2 Ultra.


RAID — What It Is and When You Need It

RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) combines multiple drives to either increase speed, add data protection, or both. The main levels you'll encounter:

  • RAID 0 (Striping): Data is split across multiple drives simultaneously. Maximum speed — a two-drive RAID 0 can roughly double throughput. No redundancy: if one drive fails, all data is lost. Used for scratch disks and temporary high-performance storage.
  • RAID 1 (Mirroring): Data is written identically to two drives. Half the capacity, but if one drive fails the other has a complete copy. Good for critical data that can't be recreated.
  • RAID 5: Requires three or more drives. Combines performance with single-drive failure protection. The most common choice for professional storage arrays.
  • RAID 10 (1+0): Mirrored pairs that are also striped. Speed and redundancy combined. Requires four drives minimum.

For most Mac users, RAID isn't necessary. It becomes relevant for high-end video production and post-production workflows where you need both maximum throughput and data protection. APFS and Drive Formatting

macOS uses APFS (Apple File System) by default for SSDs. It's optimised for flash storage — fast, space-efficient, and supports features like snapshots and Time Machine. When you format an external SSD for use with a Mac, APFS is the right choice for a Mac-only drive. If you need to share the drive with Windows PCs, format it as exFAT instead — readable and writable by both operating systems without additional software.

  • macOS + apps: Internal NVMe (always)
  • 4K video editing scratch disk: USB4 or Thunderbolt NVMe external SSD
  • Photo library / media archive: Thunderbolt or USB4 external SSD, 2TB–4TB
  • Time Machine backups: USB 3 or Thunderbolt external drive — speed matters less here
  • On-set video recording / field work: Rugged IP-rated SSD like the Envoy Pro FX
  • Professional post-production / 8K RAW: Thunderbolt RAID array like ThunderBlade X8
