Do I need to buy an SSD separately, or does it come with one?
Both options exist. The base Echo 13 Thunderbolt 5 SSD Dock has an empty M.2 NVMe slot so you can fit your own drive (up to 8TB). If you'd rather not source and install a drive yourself, choose the version pre-loaded with a Thunderbolt 5-certified Kingston PCIe 4.0 SSD in 1TB, 2TB, or 4TB - it arrives fitted and ready to use.
Will this dock properly charge my laptop, or just trickle power?
It delivers up to 140W through the Thunderbolt 5 host connection, which is enough to fully charge and power the vast majority of laptops through the same cable that carries your data and displays - no separate laptop charger needed on your desk.
How many displays can I actually run through this dock?
It depends on your computer's graphics capability. Mac users on M1 to M3 base models get one display; M4/M5 base models and Pro/Max chips typically get two or three; M4 Max, M5 Pro, and M5 Max models can push three or even four displays with a daisy-chain connection. Windows support varies by CPU generation and GPU - check the Compatibility table above or the linked Displays Compatibility PDF for your exact setup.
Is the fan noisy?
No. It's a Sunon fan running at roughly 30dB, comparable to a soft whisper or rustling leaves. It runs constantly by design, since the dock is always ready to deliver charging power to your laptop, but at that volume it isn't something you'll notice on a desk.
Will it work with my Windows PC, not just a Mac?
Yes. It supports Windows 11 (24H2 or newer) on Intel 12th Gen and newer CPUs, plus Core Ultra 1 and 2 (note: Core Ultra 1/2 systems may cap 4TB SSD write speeds around 800MB/s). AMD Ryzen 7040/8040 and Ryzen AI 300+ laptops with USB4 are also supported. It is not compatible with 11th Gen Intel CPUs.
Can I use the memory card slots and a peripheral at the same time as charging my laptop?
Yes. The SD and microSD slots, USB-A ports, Ethernet, and audio jack all operate independently of the Thunderbolt host connection, so you can offload a memory card, run a peripheral, and charge your laptop simultaneously through the one Thunderbolt 5 cable.
