Does the SSD come pre-installed or do I have to fit it myself?
The Samsung 990 Pro SSD comes pre-installed in the Acasis dock — the bundle is ready to use straight out of the box. You just need to format the SSD on first use (your device will prompt you to do this automatically when you connect it).
Will this work with my iPhone for 4K ProRes recording?
Yes — the dock connects via USB-C at 10Gbps, which is sufficient bandwidth for 4K 60Hz ProRes recording. This works on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Standard iPhone 15 and 16 models support external storage recording but at lower ProRes resolutions. You'll need iOS 17 or later.
Can I use the HDMI and record to SSD at the same time?
Yes. The HDMI 2.0 output and the SSD recording run simultaneously — you can mirror your iPhone screen to a 4K monitor while recording ProRes directly to the SSD. PD 100W passthrough also works at the same time, so your phone (or connected laptop) stays charged throughout.
Is the Samsung 990 Pro the right drive for this enclosure?
Yes, and deliberately so. The Acasis dock uses USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps), not Thunderbolt or USB4. The Samsung 990 Pro's raw PCIe 4.0 speed is far above what the interface can use, but what matters here is sustained write performance — the 990 Pro handles continuous sequential writes without throttling, which is exactly what 4K ProRes recording demands. It's reliable, well-cooled by the dock's built-in fan, and covered by Samsung's 5-year warranty.
Does this work with MacBook and Windows laptops too?
Yes — the Acasis dock works with any USB-C laptop (Mac or Windows). On MacBook it provides extra storage, a 4K HDMI display output, SD card reader, USB-A and USB-C ports, and 100W charging passthrough. It's essentially a compact hub with built-in SSD storage. macOS, Windows, and Linux are all supported.
