Product Description
When the data you are carrying is genuinely sensitive, the drive protecting it needs to be built to a different standard. The DataLocker DL450 FE is a rugged, TAA-compliant encrypted portable hard drive designed for organisations that operate in regulated environments — government agencies, defence contractors, healthcare providers, legal teams, and anyone else for whom a data breach is not an acceptable outcome.
AES-XTS 256-bit hardware encryption runs directly on the device, with onboard key generation that never exposes keys to the host system. FIPS 140-3 Level 3 certified, Common Criteria EAL 5+ certified, and sourced through a NATO-trusted supply chain — the DL450 FE meets the standards that matter in procurement frameworks where security is a hard requirement, not a preference. The Standard edition works fully as a standalone device with password-based and biometric authentication, no management software required.

- FIPS 140-3 Level 3 certified | Common Criteria EAL 5+ certified
- TAA compliant | NATO-trusted supply chain
- IP67 rated | MIL-STD-810H certified — built for field use
- Password-based and biometric authentication (Windows Hello, Touch ID)
- USB-C interface — USB 3.2 and USB 2.0 compatible
- HDD: 150 MB/s read, 100 MB/s write (USB-C 3.2)
- Hardware sanitize with cryptographic erase (NIST 800-88) in seconds
- Kensington Security Slot for physical protection
- Available in 1TB and 2TB | 3-year limited warranty
- Compatible with Windows and macOS
The metal-framed enclosure is IP67 rated against dust and water immersion, and MIL-STD-810H certified for shock, vibration, and temperature extremes. Epoxy-coated internals mean the drive resists physical tampering — a requirement in environments where hardware-level attack is a real consideration. A Kensington Security Slot allows the drive to be cable-locked when in use. This is a drive built to survive the environments it is deployed in.
Authentication is handled entirely on the device — no software installation required for standalone use. Password entry and biometric login via Windows Hello or Apple Touch ID give users fast, flexible access. Entering an incorrect password too many times triggers an automatic crypto-erase, permanently destroying the encryption keys and rendering all data unrecoverable. The hardware sanitize feature completes a NIST 800-88 compliant cryptographic erase in seconds — full data destruction without overwrite delays.
The Standard edition (Optional Management) is ready to use straight out of the box. It can be connected to SafeConsole at a later date if centralised management, smart card authentication (CAC, PIV, YubiKey PIV), audit reporting, or remote wipe capability becomes a requirement in the future.
What is the difference between the Standard and Managed editions?
The Standard edition (labelled Optional Management) works fully as a standalone device straight out of the box — no management software required. It supports password-based and biometric (Windows Hello, Touch ID) authentication and can be used independently without any network connection or server. The Managed edition requires a SafeConsole subscription and connects to DataLocker's centralised management platform, which adds smart card authentication (CAC, PIV, YubiKey PIV), remote wipe, certified data erasure, policy enforcement, and audit reporting. The Standard edition can be enrolled into SafeConsole at a later date if your requirements change.
Does the DL450 FE HDD work with macOS?
Yes. The DL450 FE is compatible with macOS, but requires a one-time driver installation with elevated privileges on first use. DataLocker bundles the driver as on-board software on the drive itself, so no separate download is needed — the guided setup walks you through it on first connection. Once installed, the drive operates normally across macOS sessions. It can also be mass-deployed via network management tools for no end-user impact in enterprise environments.
What happens if the drive is lost or stolen?
The data is protected by AES-XTS 256-bit hardware encryption with onboard key generation — without the correct authentication, the data is inaccessible. If an incorrect password is entered repeatedly, the drive triggers an automatic crypto-erase, permanently destroying the encryption keys and rendering all data unrecoverable. The hardware sanitize feature also allows an authorised user to perform a NIST 800-88 compliant cryptographic erase in seconds. In the Managed edition, remote wipe via SafeConsole adds an additional layer of protection for connected deployments.
How does the HDD version compare to the SSD version?
Both the HDD and SSD versions of the DL450 FE share identical security credentials — AES-XTS 256-bit hardware encryption, FIPS 140-3 Level 3 certification, Common Criteria EAL 5+, IP67, and MIL-STD-810H. The key differences are speed and capacity range. The HDD delivers up to 150 MB/s read and 100 MB/s write over USB-C 3.2, while the SSD reaches 250 MB/s read and write. The HDD is available in 1TB and 2TB; the SSD extends to 4TB, 7.6TB, and 15.3TB. For most document, archive, and backup workloads the HDD is more than sufficient — and comes at a lower price point.
What certifications does the DL450 FE carry?
The DataLocker DL450 FE is FIPS 140-3 Level 3 certified and Common Criteria EAL 5+ certified for its cryptographic processes. It is TAA (Trade Agreements Act) compliant, sourced through a NATO-trusted supply chain, and certified to IP67 for dust and water resistance. The enclosure meets MIL-STD-810H (Military Standard) for durability against shock, vibration, altitude, and temperature extremes. These certifications make it suitable for use in government, defence, and regulated industry procurement frameworks.
