Does the 4K X work with a Mac?

Yes. The 4K X is fully plug-and-play on macOS using Elgato's Capture Utility, and also works with OBS Studio and other supported third-party software on Mac.

Can I capture in 4K144, or is that only for passthrough?

Both. The 4K X can passthrough up to 4K144 to your monitor and separately capture up to 2160p144 SDR, or 2160p30 in full HDR10. HDR capture currently requires Windows; HDR passthrough works on any platform.

Do I need a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port, or will any USB-C port work?

A USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) port delivers full performance. The 4K X will still work on USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, but capture resolution will be reduced.

Will this work with unencrypted sources only, or can I capture from streaming apps too?

The HDMI input is unencrypted only, so it will not capture HDCP-protected content such as Blu-ray players or some streaming apps. It works perfectly with consoles, PCs, and other standard unencrypted HDMI sources.

Is a separate power supply needed?

No. The 4K X is fully USB bus-powered, so no external power adapter is required.
