Product Description
Tape storage is not a legacy technology — it is the most cost-effective and energy-efficient medium for large-scale archive, and the LTO-8 generation represents a significant step forward in both. The Fujifilm LTO Ultrium 8 data cartridge delivers 12TB native capacity (30TB compressed at 2.5:1) — double the native storage of LTO-7 on a cartridge of identical physical dimensions. For organisations running tape libraries, that translates directly into half the number of media slots required for the same data footprint, or double the archive depth in the same rack space. For standalone drive users, it means fewer cartridge swaps and lower media cost per terabyte.
Fujifilm's Barium Ferrite (BaFe) particle formulation enables the higher recording density of LTO-8 without compromising the long-term stability that tape is known for. BaFe particles resist oxidation better than earlier metal particle formulations, which is one of the reasons Fujifilm can guarantee a 30-year archival life under proper storage conditions. The integrated 16KB non-contact IC memory chip provides per-cartridge usage tracking — load cycles, error rates, write history — giving library management software the data it needs to optimise media scheduling and flag cartridges before failure becomes a risk.

LTO-8 occupies the current mid-tier of the LTO roadmap — supported by LTO-8 drives for full read/write, and also readable and writable on LTO-9 drives under the standard LTO two-generation backward compatibility rule. This makes LTO-8 a sound choice for organisations building out archive infrastructure today, with confidence that their media will remain accessible as drive generations advance. The red cartridge colour distinguishes LTO-8 media from LTO-7 (purple) and LTO-9 (green) at a glance — useful in mixed tape libraries.

Product Q&A
Q: Which tape drives are compatible with this cartridge?
A: The LTO-8 cartridge is designed for LTO-8 tape drives and is also readable and writable on LTO-9 drives (one generation back is fully supported per the LTO standard). It is not compatible with LTO-7 or earlier drives, nor with LTO-10 drives (which support only LTO-9 as the backward-compatible generation). Always confirm your drive generation before ordering.
Q: What is the difference between native and compressed capacity?
A: Native capacity (12TB) is the raw, uncompressed storage. Compressed capacity (30TB) assumes a 2.5:1 compression ratio — a standard LTO benchmark. In practice, already-compressed data (video files, encrypted backups, ZIP archives) will achieve minimal additional compression, so native capacity is the reliable figure for planning purposes.
Q: Can I use LTO-8 media in an older LTO-7 drive?
A: No. LTO-8 cartridges are not backward compatible with LTO-7 or earlier drives. The LTO standard supports backward compatibility in one direction only: newer drives can read and write older generation media. An LTO-7 drive cannot read or write LTO-8 cartridges.
Q: How should LTO tapes be stored for maximum archival life?
A: For archival storage (up to 30 years), Fujifilm recommends 16°C to 25°C and 20% to 50% relative humidity, away from direct sunlight and magnetic fields. For working storage, operating conditions are 10°C to 45°C at 10% to 80% non-condensing humidity. Allow tapes stored in cold or humid conditions to acclimatise before use.
Q: Is this cartridge WORM?
A: No. This is a standard rewritable LTO-8 cartridge. WORM variants are available in the LTO range for compliance and legal hold requirements but are a separate product. Contact us if you need WORM media.
