Product Description
The Fujifilm LTO Ultrium 9 is the current flagship of the LTO tape media range, and the numbers justify that position. 18TB of native capacity (45TB compressed at 2.5:1) per cartridge makes LTO-9 the most storage-dense removable tape media commercially available. For organisations managing petabyte-scale archives — broadcast libraries, genomics research, financial records, cloud-tier overflow — LTO-9 reduces the media count, the handling, and the physical storage footprint compared to any previous generation. And it does it while maintaining the same cartridge dimensions and the same 30-year archival life guarantee.
Fujifilm's Barium Ferrite (BaFe) formulation reaches its highest recording density yet in LTO-9, enabled by the fine particle size and magnetic stability that BaFe provides over older metal particle (MP) formulations. The built-in 16KB non-contact IC memory chip carries full cartridge history — load cycles, error rates, write statistics — which feeds directly into tape library management systems for predictive maintenance and optimised media scheduling. LTO-9 is also forward-looking: tapes written today will be readable by LTO-10 drives when that generation arrives, protecting your archive investment.

LTO-9 is the generation to buy if you are specifying a new tape infrastructure today, or upgrading an existing LTO-8 library. LTO-9 drives read and write both LTO-9 and LTO-8 media, so a transition does not require replacing your existing cartridge stock all at once — you can migrate gradually as you add new capacity. The distinctive green shell makes LTO-9 cartridges immediately identifiable in a mixed tape library alongside LTO-7 (purple) and LTO-8 (red).

Product Q&A
Q: Which tape drives are compatible with this cartridge?
A: The LTO-9 cartridge is designed for LTO-9 tape drives and will also be readable and writable on LTO-10 drives when that generation becomes available (the LTO standard guarantees one generation of backward read/write compatibility). It is not compatible with LTO-8 or earlier drives. Always confirm your drive generation before ordering.
Q: What is the difference between native and compressed capacity?
A: Native capacity (18TB) is the raw, uncompressed storage. Compressed capacity (45TB) assumes a 2.5:1 compression ratio — the standard LTO benchmark. In practice, data that is already compressed (video files, encrypted backups, ZIP archives) will see little additional compression, so native capacity is the figure to use for planning and budgeting.
Q: Can LTO-9 media be used in an LTO-8 drive?
A: No. LTO-9 cartridges cannot be read or written by LTO-8 or earlier drives. LTO backward compatibility works in one direction only: a newer drive can access older generation media. An LTO-8 drive cannot access LTO-9 cartridges under any circumstances.
Q: How should LTO tapes be stored for maximum archival life?
A: For long-term archival (up to 30 years), Fujifilm recommends 16°C to 25°C and 20% to 50% relative humidity, away from direct sunlight and magnetic fields. Working storage conditions are 10°C to 45°C at 10% to 80% non-condensing humidity. Always allow tapes to acclimatise to operating temperature before inserting them into a drive.
Q: Is this cartridge WORM?
A: No. This is a standard rewritable LTO-9 cartridge. WORM variants exist in the LTO range for compliance, audit trail, and legal hold requirements but are sold separately. Contact us if you need WORM media.
