Product Description
Cold storage has a cost problem. Hard drives fill up, cloud bills compound, and neither option is designed for data that needs to sit untouched for decades. LTO tape solves all of it — and the OWC Archive Pro LTO-9 is the cleanest way to bring professional tape archiving into a Thunderbolt-connected Mac or PC workflow without a rack, a data centre, or a dedicated IT team.
The Archive Pro houses an IBM LTO Ultrium 9 drive in a compact, handle-equipped aluminium enclosure that connects via Thunderbolt 3. Each LTO-9 tape holds up to 18TB native — and the drive reads LTO-8 as well, so your existing tape library stays accessible. At up to 300 MB/s native transfer speed, getting large datasets to tape does not have to be an overnight job. An optional internal 2.5" or 3.5" drive expansion bay gives you hybrid on-device storage for active project tiering. Hedge Canister archiving software (a £399 value) is included, turning tape creation and retrieval into a drag-and-drop operation with fully searchable catalogs.

The economics of LTO tape are hard to argue with. A 10-year Total Cost of Ownership study by the Enterprise Strategy Group found that LTO tape delivers a 577% ROI — the highest of any storage medium — with up to 53% lower costs than HDD-based archival storage. The Archive Pro pays for itself through the ongoing savings on media cost per terabyte, not a one-time upgrade.
LTFS formatting means tapes mount like a hard drive on macOS, Windows, and Linux. Files appear in folders. You drag, drop, and retrieve without learning new software or dealing with proprietary formats. Included Hedge Canister adds catalog creation for every tape — catalogs mount as a network drive, are fully searchable by Finder, and let you find and retrieve individual files without mounting the physical tape until necessary. This reduces unnecessary tape wear and makes the Archive Pro practical for day-to-day retrieval, not just disaster recovery.
The second Thunderbolt 3 port supports daisy-chaining up to five additional Thunderbolt devices, a USB-C peripheral, or a DisplayPort display. The Thunderbolt host port delivers 85W of notebook charging, so the Archive Pro can sit cleanly in a mobile edit suite without a separate power brick.
What is LTFS and why does it matter?
LTFS (Linear Tape File System) is an open standard that formats LTO tapes so they appear to the operating system as a standard drive — files and folders visible in Finder or Explorer, fully accessible via drag and drop. Because LTFS is a cross-platform open standard, LTO tapes formatted with LTFS can be read on any system with an LTO drive running macOS, Windows, or Linux, without proprietary software or hardware. This is the key reason LTO tape is the preferred long-term archival format for broadcast, film, and regulated industries — the data remains accessible decades from now on any compatible hardware.
Which tape formats does the Archive Pro support?
The Archive Pro's IBM LTO Ultrium 9 drive reads and writes LTO-9 and LTO-8 tapes. LTO-9 tapes hold up to 18TB native (45TB compressed) at up to 300 MB/s native transfer speed. LTO-8 tapes hold up to 12TB native (30TB compressed). The drive does not read or write LTO-7 or earlier tapes — if you need LTO-7 compatibility, OWC offers Archive Pro solutions with LTO-7 drives. New LTO-9 media must be initialised the first time it is used in an LTO-9 drive — OWC provides instructions for this process.
What is Hedge Canister and what does it include?
Hedge Canister is a professional LTFS archiving application (valued at £399) included with every Archive Pro. It simplifies tape creation to a true drag-and-drop workflow — select files, drag to the Archive Pro, and Canister handles LTFS formatting, xxHash64 verification, catalog creation, and log generation. Catalogs mount as a network drive and are fully searchable by Finder on macOS, so you can locate files and preview what is on a tape without physically mounting it. Canister supports archiving to one or two LTO drives simultaneously and tape spanning. Note: Hedge Canister version 25.2 or later is required for macOS 26 Tahoe compatibility.
Does the Archive Pro work on macOS without extra hardware?
The Archive Pro requires a driver to enable the SAS interface between the Thunderbolt controller and the LTO drive. OWC provides full instructions for both the Mac ATTO SAS HBA driver and the Windows ATTO Express SAS HBA driver. Driver installation is a one-time process. Additionally, the system must not be allowed to sleep while the Archive Pro is powered on — failure to disable sleep mode may create excessive heat and void the LTO drive warranty. Driver download instructions are linked in the product documentation.
Can the Archive Pro be used for compliance and regulatory archiving?
Yes. The Archive Pro supports WORM (Write Once, Read Many) LTO tape cartridges, which store data in a non-erasable, non-rewritable format. This makes it suitable for healthcare, financial services, legal, and government use cases where data integrity regulations — including HIPAA, SEC 17a-4, and similar frameworks — require tamper-proof long-term retention. The 30+ year tape media longevity and cross-platform LTFS standard further ensure that archived data remains readable and legally defensible for the required retention period.
