The OWC ThunderBay 4 Thunderbolt 5 with hard drives installed is a complete four-bay desktop RAID storage solution for video production, photography, large project files, backup and archiving. Choose from 32TB, 48TB, 64TB, 80TB or 96TB of total installed raw capacity.
Unlike the DIY enclosure-only version, this model is supplied with four SATA hard drives already installed, a factory-configured RAID 5 volume and three years of SoftRAID Premium access. RAID 5 protects against the failure of one drive, but is not a substitute for an independent backup.
Dual Thunderbolt 5 connectivity provides fast data transfers and daisy chaining. OWC quotes up to 1268MB/s with HDDs in RAID 0; actual speed in the supplied RAID 5 configuration will differ depending on capacity, drives and host.

Q: Are the hard drives included and installed?
A: Yes. Each capacity option includes four pre-installed hard drives. This is a complete storage system, not an empty DIY enclosure.
Q: Is the listed capacity usable storage?
A: No. The advertised 32TB–96TB capacities are total raw drive capacities. Factory RAID 5 uses the equivalent of one drive for parity, so usable capacity is lower, with further differences from filesystem formatting.
Q: Does the system include SoftRAID?
A: Yes. These populated models include three years of SoftRAID Premium access and are supplied preconfigured as RAID 5.
Q: Can I connect it to a Thunderbolt 3 Mac?
A: Supported host interfaces include Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4 and USB4, plus Thunderbolt 3 on Mac only, subject to operating system requirements.
Q: Is RAID 5 a replacement for backup?
A: No. RAID 5 offers single-drive fault tolerance but does not protect against accidental deletion, corruption, theft or multiple-drive failure. Keep a separate backup.
