Does this work with a Mac out of the box?
Yes. The TS-253E-8G supports macOS 10.10 and later, and includes full Time Machine support so you can back up your Mac directly over the network without any extra software. You manage the NAS through your web browser using QNAP's QTS operating system, so no drivers are needed on the Mac itself.
Does it come with hard drives included?
No, the TS-253E-8G ships as a diskless enclosure. You will need to add your own 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA hard drives or SSDs (up to 18TB per bay, 36TB total). We recommend NAS-rated drives such as Seagate IronWolf or WD Red for 24/7 reliability.
What are the M.2 slots for?
The two M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe slots can be used to install SSDs as a high-speed cache, dramatically improving read and write performance for frequently accessed files, or configured as an independent all-flash storage pool. M.2 SSDs are sold separately.
Can I upgrade the RAM later?
Yes. The TS-253E-8G ships with 8GB of DDR4 RAM installed and has two SODIMM slots, supporting up to 16GB total. This is useful if you plan to run more demanding QNAP apps, virtual machines, or want smoother multitasking.
Is this suitable for video editing backups?
Yes. With dual 2.5GbE ports and optional NVMe SSD caching, the TS-253E-8G is well suited to storing and backing up video project files for small studios. For very large 4K/8K workflows with multiple simultaneous editors, QNAP's higher-tier models with 10GbE may be a better fit, but for most freelance and small studio setups this delivers excellent value.
