What speeds can I actually expect in real-world use?
The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is rated at up to 1050 MB/s read and 1000 MB/s write over USB 3.2 Gen 2. In real-world use with a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port and large sequential files (video footage, RAW photo batches, large archives), you will get very close to those figures. Smaller mixed files will be somewhat lower, which is true of any SSD. The key is using a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port; if your machine only has USB 3.0 or 3.1 Gen 1 (5Gb/s), speeds will be capped at around 400-500 MB/s. Still fast, just not the full figure.
Does it work directly with iPhone or Android?
Yes. The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is tested and compatible with iPhone 15 and later (which have USB-C) — connect directly with a USB-C to USB-C cable. For older iPhones with Lightning, you will need a Lightning to USB-C adapter. On Android, it works with Android 11+ devices that support USB OTG over USB-C. The SanDisk Memory Zone app (Google Play) makes file management and automatic backup straightforward on Android.
Is the encryption easy to set up, and what happens if I forget my password?
Setting up password protection is straightforward — you install the SanDisk SecureAccess software (Windows) or download the app (Mac), set your password, and from that point the protected partition is locked until the correct password is entered. If you forget your password, the data on the protected partition cannot be recovered — the encryption is hardware-based and there is no backdoor or master key. Keep a note of your password somewhere safe.
Can I use this with a PS5 or Xbox?
Yes. The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD works with PlayStation 5 as extended storage — you can store and launch PS4 games directly from it, and use it to archive PS5 games (transfer back to internal storage to play). It is not fast enough for native PS5 game play from external storage, but it is an excellent and cost-effective solution for managing your PS5 game library. Xbox Series X/S users can store and play Xbox One backward-compatible titles directly from it.
How does the 8TB version compare to the 1TB and 2TB?
All capacities use the same interface (USB 3.2 Gen 2), the same physical dimensions, and the same read/write speed ratings. The 8TB is the same compact form factor — 100.80 x 52.55 x 9.60 mm — just with considerably more NAND inside. If you shoot a lot of video or manage large archives on the go, the 8TB eliminates the need to carry multiple drives. The price-per-GB does increase at 8TB compared to 1TB and 2TB, so if you do not need the capacity, the smaller options offer better value.
