Studios running a Mac Studio for heavy compute and a Mac mini for a secondary task (encoding, monitoring, a lightweight render node) usually end up with two machines taking up two separate shelves or two rack units, plus whatever cable management chaos comes with it. This bundle collapses that into one enclosure: the Mac Studio sits on one side behind Sonnet's quick-release front panel, and the xMac mini module occupies the other, holding the Mac mini with its own front-accessible power button and a USB-C passthrough so you're not reaching around the back of the rack to plug anything in.
Both units keep their normal operating characteristics. The enclosure's open-back design and front ventilation mean neither Mac is sitting in a sealed box recycling its own hot air, so you get the same thermal behaviour you'd see on a desk, just rack-mounted and road-ready.

Do the Mac Studio and Mac mini run independently, or is this some kind of combined system?
Independently. This is a rackmount housing solution, not a networking or clustering product. Each Mac keeps its own OS, storage, and connections; the bundle just lets both machines live in the same 3U rack space with front-panel access to power and ports.
Which Mac mini models fit the expansion module?
The Apple Mac mini (2024 or newer), in either the M4 or M4 Pro configuration.
Which Mac Studio models fit the enclosure?
Any Mac Studio from the M1 Max/M1 Ultra generation through the current M4 Max generation. See the Compatibility tab for exact model numbers.
Can I still add a PCIe card expansion module later?
Yes. The xMac Studio enclosure keeps its expansion bay for an optional Sonnet Echo III or Echo I PCIe card expansion module, sold separately, if you need to add audio or video capture cards down the line.
Is storage included?
No. The enclosure has physical space for up to three USB or Thunderbolt SSDs beneath the Mac Studio, secured with the included adhesive-backed magnets, but the drives themselves are sold separately.
