What's the difference between CFexpress Type A and Type B?
Type A and Type B are different physical formats — they are not interchangeable. Type B is the larger card used in cameras from Nikon, Canon, Fujifilm, Blackmagic, Panasonic, RED, and Sony BURANO. Type A is the smaller format, used exclusively in Sony Alpha and FX cameras. Check your camera's manual to confirm which type it accepts before ordering.
Do I need a special card reader to use this card with my Mac or PC?
Yes — CFexpress Type B cards require a compatible card reader. Standard SD or USB card readers will not work. We also stock the OWC Atlas Dual CFexpress + SD Card Reader, which supports both CFexpress Type A and Type B alongside SD cards and connects via USB-C / Thunderbolt.
What does VPG400 mean?
VPG (Video Performance Guarantee) is a certification from the CompactFlash Association. VPG400 means the card is certified to sustain a minimum write speed of 400 MB/s continuously — but the CFX4-B Series far exceeds this baseline. Certified minimum sustained write speeds are: 800 MB/s for the 512GB, 1500 MB/s for the 1TB, and 2400 MB/s for both the 2TB and 4TB. This matters for professional video recording — it guarantees no dropped frames even at the highest recording bitrates.
Which capacity should I choose?
The 512GB is a solid choice for shooters who rotate cards regularly or work in controlled production environments. The 1TB is the best all-round choice for a full day of high-resolution recording. The 2TB suits documentary and long-form filmmakers who need to minimise swaps, while the 4TB is for extended productions, multi-camera workflows, or anyone using the card as primary on-set storage. The 2TB and 4TB models also offer higher minimum sustained write speeds (2400 MB/s), making them better suited for the highest-bitrate shooting modes on demanding cameras like the Blackmagic URSA Cine 12K LF.
