MacBook Pro 2013–2015
Upgrade the internal SSD and extend the useful life of a capable Mac
For users whose Mac is otherwise working well, increasing internal capacity can be more practical than replacing the whole computer.
Compatibility matters: the replacement SSD, adapter or kit must match the exact model identifier. Always verify before ordering.

Create and verify a full backup before installation.
Second independent copy
Keep another copy on a different drive or in another location. RAID is not a substitute for backup.
Installation note: professional installation is the safer choice when the user is not comfortable opening the MacBook Pro and handling small internal components.

Use Thunderbolt 3 to move beyond the limits of internal storage
A single Thunderbolt connection can add fast project storage, displays, USB devices, networking and backup.
Thunderbolt 3 uses the USB-C connector, but not every USB-C device provides Thunderbolt performance. Check the specification, not only the connector shape.

Apple Silicon changes the upgrade path—but greatly expands the workflow
The internal SSD cannot be replaced after purchase. Expansion therefore moves outside the Mac, where Thunderbolt and USB4 can support portable drives, professional arrays, docks, networking and backup.
Why Apple Silicon changes storage upgrades: internal capacity remains fixed, but fast external storage can hold photo libraries, video projects, sample libraries, virtual machines and general files.

MacBook Pro storage and workflow questions
Can I upgrade the internal SSD?
Selected older models, including compatible 2013–2015 systems, can accept a replacement SSD. Apple Silicon MacBook Pro systems do not provide a conventional user-replaceable internal SSD.
Is an external SSD fast enough for editing?
Yes, when the SSD and connection suit the workload. Demanding multi-stream or high-resolution work may benefit from professional multi-drive storage.
Do I need Thunderbolt 5?
Not necessarily. It is most valuable when several high-bandwidth devices, demanding storage or advanced displays are used together.
Does RAID replace backup?
No. RAID may improve availability or performance, but a separate backup is still required.
When is 10Gb Ethernet worthwhile?
When the Mac regularly moves large files to and from a compatible NAS, server or shared studio storage. The full network path must support 10GbE.
